Philosophy, Goals & Vision

Creation of dialogues. The rural Kilimanjaro Region suffers under the increasing migration of locals to the big cities like Daressalam, Arusha and Moshi. Thus, children grow up far away from their ancestral homeland and valuable traditions are getting lost. Due to this matter the trail aims to create encounters inviting people of different cultures to start a dialogue and maintain the culture of the Chagga. This can be achieved by for example Tanzanian school excursions with workshops and short hikes along the Kilimanjaro Friendship Trail.

Nature. Its is very interesting to get to know the biological diversity along the Kilimanjaro. The garden and the cultural zones, through which the trail runs, is until today a habitat shared by man and animals alike. There are various species and ecological systems. To be precise it is a unique agro-forest with 1000 kilometre squared combining forestry and agriculture in harmony. The architecture of the gardens seems to imitate the stratification of plants of the neighbouring rain forest.

The layered horticulture with its mixture of copses and open spaces favours biodiversity with plants of more than 500 species. 100 of them are crops as well as a divers fauna.

This is a great place for hikers to plant trees along the trail.

Daily bread. Within this aspect the focus is drawn to the Chagga's traditional economies. The Hikers can learn a lot about traditional farming practices of the Chagga people.

What are they living of? What are they cultivating? Who is the bread winner? What kind of cattle farming exists? What are the roles of women and the local markets? How can the trail contribute as an income generator?

Sports. If you hike the trail you will experience that you are not hiking an ordinary trail. Being in a good condition as well as  bring mobility capacities and endurance is crucial. Especially the descends on narrow paths into steep valleys, the crossing of small and narrow rivers as well as a steep ascent on the other side are challenges. To hike the trail is an extraordinary sport activity which sometimes demands willpower and thus contributes to individual health care.

Spirituality. Hikers who are interested in historical knowledge about the development of religion and spirituality at Mount Kilimanjaro are invited to experience as well as learn about the traditions and the current situation.  What role has faith within the daily life? Which traditional faith influences the people at Mount Kilimanjaro today? Within this context an emphasis is put on ancestor worship.

Medicine. How is the medical supply and care in the Kilimanjaro Region? What are the Chagga's traditional healing methods? Which plants are used? During the hike along the trail trees can be spotted  missing parts of bark. What is made out of the bark? What are the healing properties?
